A probe is under way after a man allegedly discharged a firearm following a 'verbal altercation' near Walkergate Metro Station

A man remains in police custody after a gun was allegedly fired in Newcastle.

Specialist search teams were carrying out investigations on Wednesday morning following the alleged shooting near Walkergate Metro Station on Sunday.

Police were called to the scene at around 8am after a report that two men had been threatened and a weapon was discharged.

A spokesperson for the force said that the victims were approached by two men who got out of a vehicle, one of whom was known to them.

They then had a "verbal altercation" before one of the men in the vehicle removed a reported firearm and discharged it near to the victims.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

A 48-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with the intent to endanger life.

On Wednesday morning, police confirmed that he remained in custody being questioned.
