DEAR DEIDRE: LAST week we introduced my boyfriend’s mum to my dad. It was a disaster.
We were late, as she got a phone call about some funeral arrangement – her own mum died recently – but instead of showing sympathy my dad moaned that we’d wasted his time because he’d had to wait 30 minutes.

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and are very much in love.
His mum is lovely with me but this turned into a horrible row.
I asked Dad to apologise but he stormed off.
I’ve had way too much emotional turmoil from my dad.
He’s toxic, always putting me down and making me feel bad.
Would I be wrong to cut him off?

DEIDRE SAYS: It is built into us to long for kind and loving parents, but some of us crave them in vain.
You have every right to stop contact with your dad if he only makes you unhappy with his horrible behaviour.
Tell your father you find his behaviour so distressing that you are taking a step back.
Perhaps he has an unhappy past which explains some of his behaviour . . . but it certainly doesn’t excuse it.
