Cesc Fabregas has challenged Thiago Alcantara to show he has the consistency to perform on the biggest stage.

The Spanish international had initially struggled to get to grips with life in the Premier League since joining from Bayern Munich in September in a £25million deal.

An impressive performance in the Merseyside derby back in October was followed by a two-and-a-half-month lay-off through injury.

Thiago’s return then coincided with Liverpool's slump in form at the start of the calendar year with some questioning whether the midfielder was suited to Jurgen Klopp’s way of playing.

But the former Barcelona star finished the season strongly, helping Liverpool qualify for next season’s Champions League.

That impressive form led to Thiago being included in Luis Enrique’s 23-man squad for this summer’s European Championships.

This the midfielder's third major international tournament for his country, but he has so far been reduced to two appearances off the bench.

It continues a familiar theme for the 30-year-old, who made two substitute appearances at Euro 2016, as well as one start and one appearance off the bench at the 2018 World Cup.

And Fabregas believes it is time for Thiago to step up and show more consistency to help Spain progress to the next stage of this summer’s Euros after two draws against Sweden and Poland in their opening group games.

“Thiago, without any doubt, he has got fantastic qualities. He started very young at Barcelona, I played with him for a year,” the Monaco star told the BBC.

“I think it’s time for Thiago to basically do something big in a big tournament.

"He has been now at the Euros, he has been at the World Cup, he never really played too much.

“So I think he needs to find a consistency to show the whole world that he really has top top level to show it at the biggest stage.”
