I’m due to give birth soon but I’m sick with worry about the coronavirus

CORONA CRISIS

DEAR DEIDRE: I’m 36 weeks pregnant and so scared about how big a threat coronavirus is to me and my baby boy.

It took us three years to conceive, I’m 27 and I’ve had a difficult pregnancy and there are concerns that our son may have a heart murmur so will be born extra vulnerable. I’m expecting to have a C section.

I know all pregnancies are precious but it would break my and my husband’s hearts if something goes wrong now.

We just want our baby to be safe. We’re both suffering a great deal of stress at the moment and can’t sleep at night which doesn’t help. I feel sick with worry.

DEIDRE SAYS: I am sorry you have all this extra stress piled on top of you both.

Do tell your midwife and the hospital maternity unit about your worries and read the detailed information for expectant mothers about coronavirus on the website of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (www.rcog.org.uk).

You can sign up for email updates as they learn more. Of course, tiny babies seem so vulnerable but so far the evidence suggests that pregnant women are no more likely to get the coronavirus compared to other healthy individuals, and the virus does not seem to pass to a baby in the womb.

So keep carefully following all the advice about limiting social distance, working from home if possible, and hygiene precautions to reduce risk of transmission. You could both start learning a relaxation routine to help lower your stress levels. My e-leaflet on Coping With Nervous Stress explains in detail.
