When it comes to household shopping, there are some things we just can't live without.

I mean none of us have forgotten the toilet roll hoarding that went on at the beginning of the pandemic - people consumed by fear they'd be having to ration their remaining two-ply among family members.

While thankfully shelves are now stocked full of the stuff, it certainly varies in price, along with many other essentials like washing up liquid and bleach.

We decided to put the main budget retailers to the test to see who's actually charging the most for such products.

Our shopping list included a big pack of toilet rolls (18 pack or as closest to it), bleach, antibacterial wipes, washing up liquid, laundry liquid and dishwasher tablets.

For certain items, like toilet roll, bleach and wipes, we stuck with their own brands. Nobody needs a £2 bottle of bleach when you can buy it for as little as 39p and we're not willing to remortgage for the sake of some scented, super cushioned loo roll.

But with other items we decided it would only be fair to compare their prices on main brands such as Fairy washing up liquid, laundry liquid and dishwasher tablets.

Where these weren't available - at Poundstretcher and B&M - we chose other well known brands of Sure laundry gel and Finish dishwasher tablets.

And we adjusted prices accordingly to account for any size difference in products.

We compared the prices at B&M, Quality Save, Home Bargains, Wilko and Poundstretcher

We found that the most expensive was Wilko, costing £13.17 for all six items, just over 20% more than the cheapest B&M, which came in at £10.92.

Home Bargains and Quality Save were only slightly higher at £10.95 each, while the bill from Poundstretcher was £11.14, largely because of the price of the wipes, which at £1.99, were double the cost of other stores for the exact same pack.

The toilet rolls would have worked out cheaper if bought in bulk though, two packs for £5, rather than the £2.99 each.

Other places had offers on too if you are able to stock up in advance, including Wilko, which was selling a number of products for two for £1.80, including Fairy washing up liquid, which would have brought the price per bottle down to 90p -cheaper than any other store.

Although Wilko was the most expensive, if you take advantage of the offers, prices work out cheaper than elsewhere

And if you've always wondered, like us, whether Home Bargains and Quality Save - which are very similar in branding and price - are indeed the same company, the answer is no.

However, Quality Save is supplied by TJ Morris Ltd – the owners of Home Bargain – which is why it stocks many of the same products and sells many of them for exactly the same prices. So there you have it!

A wilko spokesperson said: "At wilko we put the customer at the heart of everything we do and offering great quality products to hard-working communities is key for us.

“We have products and prices to suit everyone’s budget and we have price reviews and offers throughout the year on branded products which of course makes like for like comparison difficult.

“We’re a family-owned retailer who understands that saving the pennies really does count! So, we’ll continue to offer products at purse-friendly prices on our large range of products.”
