A Roy Orbison tribute act is set to put on a free show in Burton for NHS staff, who have worked on the front line during the coronavirus pandemic.

Tony Mulcahy is hoping to put on a concert at Burton Town Hall later in the year, when restrictions allow, for all those who have gone above and beyond during the coronavirus crisis as a way of thanking them.

He is also trying to negotiate free or a reduced price for taxis home from the shot so staff can let their hair down.

The date has not yet been set due to the uncertainty still surrounding the pandemic, but it is hoped that Roy Orbison tribute act Paul Hopkins will be the main act of the night, subject to the date, along with performances from Mr Mulcahy himself and a local band.

Mr Hopkins is also part of the famous Travelling Wilburys' tribute band, to which he now devotes most of his time.

Mr Mulcahy is a popular performer in the town, having being awarded the Outstanding Burton Entertainer award in 2001, 2002 and 2004 for his tribute act to Englebert Humperdinck, as well as putting on many charity concerts over the years.

He said: "The main act on my proposed concert will hopefully be [subject to agreement on dates] Paul [Roy Orbison] Hopkins.

"Paul was part of my birthday celebration at the town hall back in 2006; during which a total of three tribute acts performed.

"Naturally, because my proposed concert is for the nurses, doctors, hospital staff and front line workers, all of whom have given their time, above and beyond the call of duty, for all of us during this pandemic, Paul is providing his professional services pro-bono.

"I am providing each person who provides the appropriate ID with a free raffle ticket; and will hopefully have some real good prizes to be won.

"I am also attempting to negotiate a free, or reduced taxi fare for the homeward bound following the concert, again on production of the required ID."

He anticipates he may need to arrange two dates due to demand for the concert.

Any company, or individual, would like to make a pledge towards the town hall hire costs at this stage are asked to contact Mr Mulcahy at [email protected] or telephone a pledge on 07900 463372.
