How Man City should line up vs Real Madrid in Champions League

Manchester City could be without all three right-back options against Real Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

Joao Cancelo is suspended, and Kyle Walker has been injured — with City leaving a decision on his availability until the last minute. Similarly, John Stones hasn't trained since picking up an injury last week versus Brighton, so Guardiola could be left without any senior right-back options.

Guardiola ruled out playing Gabriel Jesus at right-back, despite offering it as a suggestion at the weekend, so he will be hoping for some positive injury news to solve his dilemma.

In attack, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez all were rested against Watford at the weekend, while Kevin De Bruyne was substituted early, so those players could be in line to feature.

Right back has been the big topic of discussion, especially as it brings the occupant into direct confrontation with danger man Vinicius Junior. With Joao Cancelo suspended and John Stones and Kyle Walker big doubts, Pep Guardiola has a major issue.

He is likely to switch either Nathan Ake or Oleks Zinchenko to right back if Stones and Walker do not make it. The rest of the team almost picks itself, with Ilkay Gundogan set to slot into midfield alongside Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri.

That leaves a fresh front three of Riyad Mahrez — who was a Champions League giant last season — Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden, with plenty of back-up on the bench in Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling.

If Stones and Walker aren't ready, then they shouldn't be risked. I can see the arguments of playing Jesus there, but for me Fernandinho seems the most logical option. He's experienced, good enough at one-vs-one defending, and can add more leadership to the side.

The players rested against Watford can return, with Guardiola's go-to Champions League formation of playing De Bruyne-Gundogan-Bernardo in midfield necessary against two of the best midfielders in world football.

In attack, that means Gabriel Jesus dropping to the bench, which would be ridiculously harsh after his four-goal haul and previous performances against Madrid. But Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez are fresher, and Jesus can play a role off the bench.

Who will play right-back if Stones and Walker can't make it is anybody's guess and leaves Guardiola in a sticky situation. While there could be an argument in starting a natural right-back in youngster Egan-Riley, I think getting an experienced head in there is worth more so Zinchenko should come in as a last resort. The rest of the back-line picks itself in Dias, Laporte and Ake on the left side.

In midfield, I'd go with the trio of De Bruyne, Rodri and Bernardo in order for Jesus to keep his place in attack. The Brazilian will be brimming with confidence after netting four times on Saturday and put in an excellent display against Real Madrid in both legs the last time they met.

I'd have him lead the line with Mahrez and Foden on the flanks.
