How Eminem kept amazing bond with daughter Hailie despite life of toxic fights, arrests & suicide attempts with wife Kim

WITH a song dedicated to 'dumping' her body in a lake and countless furious break-ups, Eminem and ex-wife Kim Scott have had an infamously explosive - and very public - on-off relationship.

But despite their rocky past, Marshall Mathers' bond with daughter Hailie has remained rock solid, with the rapper raving that the 23-year-old daughter has not only been his career's main driving force, but also his "proudest" achievement in life.

Hailie finished her studies at Michigan State University alongside her long-time boyfriend Evan McClintock in 2018, and her father this week shared his happiness at her achievements.

Appearing on Mike Tyson’s Hot Boxin' podcast, the 47-year-old hitmaker was surprisingly candid about his personal life and happily discussed seeing his little girl grow up.

"Hailie is 23, no babies, she has a boyfriend, but she’s doing good," he said. "She's made me proud for sure, she's graduated from college."

Here's a look at how they've beaten the odds and overcome years of turmoil, keeping their incredible bond throughout.

'Our neighbourhood f***ing sucked'

Eminem first met Kim when her and her twin Dawn ran away from home aged just 13.

Having introduced her to his mum Debbie, Kim moved in with the family in Detroit when the rapper was aged 15.

Two years later, the pair began dating.

They eventually moved out of the family home, according to People, before Kim fell pregnant with Hailie in 1995.

“The neighbourhoods we lived in f***ing sucked [at the time],” Scott told Rolling Stone in 1999.

However, it was the musician's determination to create a better life for Hailie that carried them through the gruelling period - which saw their house robbed multiple times.

“He didn’t want his daughter to grow up like he did,” his restaurant manager at the time, Mike Mazur, told Salon in 2000.

Sang about 'dumping Kim in lake'

Despite Eminem working all hours, tensions quickly bubbled between him and Kim - and the volatile relationship seeped into in some of the rapper's first hit songs.

97' Bonnie & Clyde is a song about his alter ego Slim Shady taking a ride with his toddler daughter to dump her mother’s body in a lake.

One lyric reads: "There goes Mama, splashing in the water/No more fighting with Dad, no more restraining order."

In the background of the track a baby girl’s gurgle can be heard. It is that of Hailie, then aged just three.

"When she [Kim] found out I used our daughter to write a song about killing her, she f***ing blew," the rapper told Rolling Stone.

The prelude to that song, simply titled Kim, did nothing to fight the fires raging between them either, as the lyrics detailed their explosive rows and his eventual fictional 'murder' of his partner.

They did, however, overcome these early rows, and eventually married on June 14, 1999.

Cruel performance lead to suicide attempt

Eminem and Kim's nuptials came right before he embarked on his breakthrough tour Up In Smoke - and their relationship once again hit the rocks.

Speaking to Dr Keith Ablow in an episode of his talk show, Kim claimed she saw her husband performing Kim in July 2000, while allegedly punching a blow-up doll that resembled her on stage.

“I knew that it was about me and that night I went home and I tried to commit suicide," she said at the time.

Thankfully, she was saved after being rushed to hospital.

It was around that time that Eminem was also arrested following a fight with a man called John Guerra - who he allegedly saw kissing Kim in a car park.

Despite her insisting it was innocent, the rapper allegedly struck Guerra with an unloaded pistol.

Guerra subsequently sued him and they settled out of court, with Eminem paying $100,000 (£77,000), according to MTV.

It was the beginning of the end for their relationship at the time, with the pair divorcing in 2001.

While Eminem continued to pursue his music career, Kim struck up a relationship with Eric Hatter and they welcomed daughter Whitney together.

However, it wasn't to last and she soon returned to Eminem - with him happily welcoming Whitney into the family, as well as Kim's niece Alaina.

Split 41 days after second wedding

The pair's romance this time round appeared to go from strength to strength, and they once again married in 2006 - despite him previously telling Rolling Stone he'd "rather have a baby through my penis than get married again".

However, it once again didn't last and Kim later told Dr Ablow that they split for the final time just 41 days later.

It sadly sparked a turbulent few years for Kim, who went on to try and take her own life again in 2015.

"I drank, I took pills and I hit the gas and aimed for a pole," she told Detroit's Channel 995 radio show Mojo in the Morning previously.

She luckily survived but was arrested for DUI - before being sentenced to 12 months of probation and a $900 fine.

While she was no longer with Eminem at the time, she later credited him with helping her through the difficult time and insisted they've been good friends ever since.

“We’re really close friends, we’re just trying to raise our kids together and make it as normal for them as possible,” she said during her radio chat.

'I think my dad's gone crazy'

Over the course of his career, Eminem wrote several songs about his daughter.

Clips of home videos of Hailie as a child have been featured in some music videos, while another called My Dad’s Gone Crazy even featured her warbling along on the hook, something that earned Hailie a Guinness World Record as the Youngest R & B Chart Entrant.

She was six years and 210 days old when that song was released in 2002.

"One day we were in the studio doing a song and she was like, ‘Somebody help me, I think my dad’s gone crazy’. I said, ‘Hailie, what did you say?’ She said it again and then said, ‘Daddy I want to do it on the mic’."

There were other songs, too, that didn’t feature Hailie’s voice but rather her spirit, some 22 in total.

The most famous of which is Hailie’s Song, which Eminem wrote for his daughter when she was seven. "My baby girl keeps getting older/I watch her grow up with pride,” Eminem raps.

'Hailie's all that I have'

While Hailie has remained out of the limelight for much of her life - bar a few appearances in her father's songs - she has revealed their bond never faltered, and they're extremely close now.

Eminem was always a hands-on dad throughout her teenage life at Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, Michigan, attending every event even when he became famous.

"When they have plays, field trips, all that stuff, I don’t miss them,” he told Rolling Stone.

Asked in 2018 if she sees much of her father now, she told the Daily Mail: "Of course, we are very close."

Eminem couldn't agree more, and speaking about his daughter in 2002, Eminem told MTV: “She has been my main source of drive and motivation, especially when she was first born.

"I didn't have a career yet, I didn't have money, I didn't have a place to live. I think that kicked me in the a*** harder knowing, 'How am I going to raise her?'

“She's always been the driving force for me to stay busy, stay focused, always been my number one reason for fear of failure.

"I can't fail. I can't have her grow up and not be able to say, 'My dad succeeded'. I talk about her a lot, the truth is she is all I got in this world. If everything ended tomorrow, she's all that I have.”

Hailie has since carved out her own career in the limelight, becoming a popular Instagram influencer with more than 1.9 million followers.
