Dieter Brummer's friends say he had struggled to adjust to life after fame.
The actor, who rose to fame in the 1990s on Aussie soap Home and Away as Shane Parrish, was tragically found dead at his home on Saturday, aged just 45.
His heartbroken friends have since spoken out to say that he "wasn't going to be on this earth for long" as he had become increasingly withdrawn as his acting career came to an end.
Sources close to the star describe him as having a troubled life and say they always "just got the impression" that he would die young, and that he really struggled when the window cleaning business he owned went under.
It's also believed he came out of a romantic relationship earlier this year.
A crew member who worked with Dieter on 2010's Underbelly: The Golden Mile, which he starred in as a corrupt police detective, said they got a "strong impression he had demons" when they first met on the set.
They told the Daily Mail : "He had friendships with co-stars while shows were filming, but he wasn't the type of guy to keep in touch once the show wrapped.
"He was a shy man who kept to himself. When I met Dieter, I felt like he wasn't going to be on this earth for long. You just got that impression."
Underbelly was Dieter's last major acting job, with him only filming a couple of guest spots in Neighbours and Winners & Losers afterwards, and going on to focus on his secondary career as a window cleaner.
He had retrained as a high-rise window washer in the late 2000s, while still working occasionally as an actor.
He had said he loved his new career because he "[didn't] have to deal with people too much".
Dieter started up his own business, but it reportedly ran into financial trouble several months ago.
And while he's said he was happy to leave acting behind, friends say he fretted over what could have been.
A pal said: "At one stage he was the most popular boy on soaps. He simply couldn't walk down the street without being stopped and photographed.
"Over the last few years, people didn't really stop him anymore. If they did, it was to ask 'What happened?'"
Tragically, it was confirmed yesterday that Dieter had been found dead at his home in Sydney at the weekend.
Police confirmed they were not treating his death as suspicious.
A spokesperson for New South Wales Police told News.com.au : "About 1.30pm (Saturday 24 July 2021), officers from The Hills Police Area Command responded to reports of a concern for welfare at a home on Glenhaven Road, Glenhaven.
"The body of a man was located inside the home. His death is not believed to be suspicious. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner."
A spokesperson for Australian TV channel Seven, which airs Home and Away, said: "Home and Away and Channel 7 are deeply saddened to hear of Dieter Brummer’s passing.
"Dieter was a much-loved Home and Away cast member and celebrated by Australian and international audiences for his award-winning portrayal of Shane Parrish.
"We send our sincere condolences to Dieter’s family and friends during this very difficult time."
