Holgate's rise to Everton's first-choice centre-half has taken many by surprise.

A half season spent out on loan in the Championship, where he was largely played out of position, meant he returned to Goodison down the pecking order.

But, after biding his time, he has grabbed his opportunity at Everton and not looked back.

Carlo Ancelotti has favoured Holgate the most of his three senior centre-half options and a new contract, signed last month, was just reward for his progress, which has accelerated this season.

He has plenty of room for improvement but the 23-year-old looks as though he will realise the potential that Everton saw in 2015 when they snapped him up from Barnsley.

Is he Everton's most improved player this season? Probably.

Mason Holgate has proved this season that he has all the attributes to flourish into one of football's finest centre-backs under Carlo Ancelotti, rising to the challenge at Everton and grabbing his opportunity when it was presented.

He has been tenacious and shown good strength in defence while his speed and ability to bring the ball out is to be admired.

Of course, there are still a number of areas for the young defender to work on but given the tremendous leaps he has already made this season it would seem like the only way is up from here, particularly with the playing style of the Blues' new Italian boss.
