A callous driver went shopping for a new car while his victim was lying dead in a hospital mortuary.

Ethan Roberts, 20, bought exactly the same model of hatchback that he had just crashed into a tree, killing his cousin Ryan Hamer, 20.

Roberts walked out of the accident unscathed but swimming instructor Ryan broke his neck and two other passengers were seriously injured.

Roberts bought a new car a week later and posted selfies on social media having fun with friends, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Ryan's devastated mother Ceri said in a victim impact statement: "Ethan was back on the road when Ryan's body had not left the hospital mortuary.

"I feel hurt and betrayed that he bought the exact same car a week after the accident.

"His life carried on as if nothing had happened."

Ryan, the drummer in local rock group Rapture, rang Roberts asking for a lift from a gig to a nightclub.

Roberts lost control of his blue Toyota Yaris while taking a corner on the A4059 near Aberdare, South Wales, shortly after midnight on April 14, 2019.

The court heard he passed his test a year earlier and had no alcohol or drugs in his system while driving at speeds of between 67 and 82mph.

Ryan was due to be his brother's best man and an empty chair was placed at the top table in his honour at the wedding four months after the fatal crash.

Devastated Mitchell Ponting said: "The only contact I have with my brother now is with his ashes but I cherish them with all my heart.

"I cannot understand how someone who has caused so much devastation and heartbreak can act with so little remorse.

"Ethan must realise that his actions have consequences."

Roberts visibly shook as he was jailed for six months after admitting causing death by careless driving.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke told him: "You caused pain and suffering to Ryan's loved ones who are your family.

"You took a bend too fast and you are not a sufficiently good or experienced driver to correct your mistake."

Roberts, of Mountain Ash, Aberdare, will be banned from driving for three years when he leaves prison.
