Raul Diniz, 80, was taken to a health centre in Brazil after being attacked at a cemetery in the Amazon region state of Roraima before being transferred to a hospital where he is said to have died from kidney complications. The funeral of his son Rui had to be suspended. Police told local media another 10 people were also stung.
An investigation into the tragedy is underway but a local official said everything was pointing to the dead man suffering an allergic reaction to the bee stings.
It is not known how his son, who died aged just 45, lost his life.
Roraima is the northernmost and least populated state of Brazil. It borders the states of Amazonas and Para and the countries of Venezuela and Guyana.
The area where Mr Diniz died is called Bonfim, a municipality in the north of the state.
The tragedy happened around 10am yesterday/on Thursday.
A relative of the dead man said he would now be buried alongside his son, who was his only child.
