A birthday cake to celebrate Meghan Markle’s 40th birthday has been ordered by Prince Harry from a bespoke bakery that charges more than £160, it has been reported.

To mark her birthday on Wednesday, the Duchess of Sussex is planning an intimate affair at the £11million California home she shares with Prince Harry.

The celebration, organised by celebrity-favourite party planner Colin Cowie, is said to include a special cake from Santa Barbara bakery Posies & Sugar.

The luxury bakery specialises in ‘naked’ cakes, a style where some of the cake’s layers are visible underneath the icing, while the exterior is brightened up with colourful fresh flowers.

A description on the baker’s website said the business was launched by founder Heather and her husband Matt in 2017, from Heather's Santa Barbara kitchen.

“I believe that the beauty in life is worth celebrating, worth throwing confetti in the air over and eating a slice of cake (or two),” the page reads.

“I believe in flowers and in being kind to ourselves and in simple, good things like peach pie.”

According to a price list on the site, a three-tiered masterpiece, serving up to 30 guests, costs $225 (£160).

An anonymous source told the Tatler the Duchess recruited the services of Colin Cowie after hearing about him from Oprah Winfrey, a close friend of Meghan’s.

Winfrey, Meghan and Prince Harry were said to have become good friends after their ground-breaking interview earlier this year, with the famed talk show host expected to attend the upcoming birthday celebrations.

A source told the Mail Online that Meghan was hoping for a fairly small gathering, with a guest list of around 65.

Her closest friends and family was expected to be in attendance, with her mother Doria Ragland another name expected on the guest list.

Her birthday bash is expected to be a low-key event compared to her extravagant £330,000 baby shower in New York ahead of Archie's arrival in 2019.

Meghan was criticised for her baby shower after she was reportedly travelling on Amal and George Clooney's £33m private jet and taking her A-list friends to New York hotspots.

Tennis champion Serena Williams, TV anchor Gayle King, celebrities Amal Clooney and best friend Jessica Mulroney were seen walking through the front door of the hotel as they attended the Duchess's celebration at the £60,000-a-night penthouse suite.

During the shower, Meghan left the hotel from the side exit and got into a State Department car and drove for dinner with her friends.

She then asked to change the route to the restaurant in a bid to avoid the cameras but the details of her trip were leaked, it is stated in the report.

She was photographed going in and leaving the restaurant.
