Officials have warned Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could lose their Duke and Duchess titles as ‘nothing is off the table’ following their interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The couple, who are currently the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, sat down for a ‘tell-all’ interview with Oprah in February without telling the Queen, it was reported. The conversation will be broadcast in the UK on Monday evening.
Senior courtiers have now warned that the pair may be asked to hand their titles back, as the interview could tear up the agreement they made with the Royal Family when they stepped back from duties last year.
Meghan and Harry said at the time that they wished to live as private citizens, before they moved to California with their son, Archie Harrison. They are now expecting their second child.
Royal sources have claimed the Queen is ‘pretty cheesed off’ by Harry and Meghan’s decision to do the Oprah interview. The monarch would have the final say in removing Harry’s title, if it were to happen.
It is thought the Prince will still keep his right to be addressed as HRH as it was given to him at birth. He and Meghan have both already been stripped of their patronages and military titles since leaving the UK.
A source told The Times: ‘There were talks at the Palace looking at how you strip him of his dukedom. It has never been done before but there are people who think it is both feasible and desirable.’
Teaser clips from the Oprah interview show Meghan opening up about her life among the royals and describing her freedom to speak about it as ‘liberating’.
She told the TV host: ‘I don’t know how they could expect that, after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.
‘And, if that comes with a risk of losing things, I mean, I … there is a lot that has been lost already.’
Meghan could also speak about the reported rift between herself and Harry and William and Kate. The Duchess of Sussex was said to have made Kate cry during a wedding dress fitting in 2018.
A source told The Sun: ‘If [Meghan] has chosen to speak candidly about her time with Kate then the damage that could be done to the monarchy is vast.
‘She has the power to lay bare just how bad things really were between her, Harry, William and Kate.’
