Hamilton Rugby Club head coach Alex Edmonstone is cautiously optimistic that competitive rugby can resume in October.

But even if Scottish Rugby’s ‘road map’ to recovery is accurate, ‘Eck’ won’t bring his players back to pre-season training until August.

He does, however, think it’s a step in the right direction.

Edmonstone said: “It’s encouraging that they have a road map that has dates on it. I was surprised, to be honest, to see that.

"They don’t say if it’s the start or the end of October, but they’re aiming for October games, so fingers crossed that, all going well, that’s what we can get to with regards to the competition, whatever that looks like.

Head coach Alex Edmonstone says starting training back before August will be too long for pre-season

“There are still rumours about starting potentially in November, or even into the new year, so I think this is ‘best case scenario’’. This guidance shouldn’t be taken as gospel, but at least it’s an indication and it allows us to plan.

“Stage 4 talks about larger training groups in August so that’s what we’re aiming for. It says 'larger group' and we don't know what that looks like, because the next one is 'team training' so there's obviously a difference in numbers.

"We're just waiting to see what that guidance is and we’re going to plan for different options on that. That will leave us August, September and whenever the games will start in October, which is quite a long pre-season so we’re aiming for lots of fun, get the boys enjoying it

“We might get to October and they then push it back, so we just want to avoid a situation where the boys are knackered by the time that we restart the season and we’ve broken then by that stage, so we want to keep it fun, enjoyable and go from there.

"But for the boys to get out and have a run around - even in small groups doing other activities - I think it’s great for people’s emotional well-being.

“It’s a step in the right direction and it’s definitely welcome, that guidance.”
