Granit Xhaka reveals how 'freak' Mikel Arteta saved him from Arsenal scrapheads and convinced him to stay

GRANIT XHAKA has revealed how his career at Arsenal was saved by a man he calls 'The Freak'.

In December 2019, Mikel said that when Arteta was appointed as manager, the Swiss international Xhaka was ready to leave the club.

And it was only a cordial conversation with a new subscriber that convinced him to give the club one last chance to mend its broken relationship.

Then less than two months later, Jhaka was stripped of his captain's armband by Unai his Emery, in the ultimate humiliation.

The fierce midfielder reacted furiously to the sarcasm of the Emirates crowd cheering on his substitute, throwing his shirt to the ground as he made his way down the tunnel and criticizing him.

He was further frustrated by the perceived lack of support he received from the club in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Emery Only Sacked after six games, Xhaka had already decided he had enough.

He admits: My suitcase was packed and I was done.

"But when Mikel was appointed, he wanted to hear my opinion about what had happened, so I met with him and explained everything to him." 25}

``I remember exactly how the conversation went. said to him.

"Of course I knew his name, but I didn't know the person. And I said, 'I'm gone, I can't wear this shirt anymore.'"

"And he said to me, 'Give me a chance for six months. If you're still not happy at the end of the season, I'm the guy to help you. Don't run away, leave.'"

``Normally, before making such a decision, I would talk to my family and representatives. I'll stay.' And I'm still here.''

Xhaka is not only still at Arsenal, he's one of the club's most important players. 38} He smiles. I am 29 years old.

"But then 17-year-old and he sees 18-year-olds coming to his pitch for training and I sometimes feel like 'you fucked me... 29'."

Xhaka was awarded £30million from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2016. He was actually signed to replace Arteta in midfield when he was hired by Arsene Wenger on a contract.

"Of course the group is much younger now. There were many experienced players, but each player has their own personality, and I have built good relationships with many men, regardless of age or nationality.

"Someone needs my help."

Mikel and I have a very special relationship here. It's a shame we only have two years left on our contract because we're building stuff.

"I was putting pressure on their holding midfielder Jorginho, but Gabi Martinelli took my position.

"Usually Gabi is a left winger and coaches say he needs to stay at right back or go inside.

"But Gabi is dropping to base in sixth place, and that's what makes Mikel so special because he sees things that others can't see. all have their own methods. But Mikel is one of the best in the way he explains and prepares.

"In my view, it is not normal."

Xhaka, who turns 30 next month, is currently studying for his coaching badge. says with a smile.

However, he had too much fun on the pitch to think of retiring any time soon, and in April's 3–1 win against Manchester United, he threw for 25 yards. Eating out is still a goal.

``I never thought I would be sitting here saying this after all that happened three years ago. I'm feeling more love, so I'm trying to make something with them again. Because I've always thought I was a good person.

"People judge us by 90 minutes a week, but by how hard we work in training."

"We all have good days and bad days, so once a week I asked the club if they would like to see the fans in training.

"It's not that I don't care what happens after the game, and I'm not here to waste time.

"Except for that moment against Palace, I've never had a problem at Arsenal, neither with my teammates nor with anyone in the building.

"People only remember one disappointing moment and they don't remember the rest of my time here. For five years I'll forget.

"But it's part of the business and there's nothing to hide. Only on the football pitch do I wear a different mask. And People need to embrace that."
