An 18 year-old woman has been left comatose in a vegetative state after a breast implant cosmetic surgery procedure went horribly wrong.
Emmalyn Nguyen, from Thornton in Colorado, was anesthetized for the boob job in August, but never woke up.
Her mom Lynn Fam, who is now suing Emmalyn’s surgeon, said: ‘Her body is still there but she’s not there, so we feel like we lost a daughter.’
Emmalyn’s dad Sonny Nguyen said he feels ‘like she has no future left.’
The couple’s lawyer David Woodruff added: ‘She will remain in a nursing home essentially non-functional with someone feeding her through a tube for the next 50 years.’
The teenager opted to undergo surgery at the Colorado Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery clinic to boost her confidence after graduating high school this summer.
But Emmalyn’s family say she went into cardiac arrest on the operating table before the surgery had even begun.Woman loved her horse so much she had him cloned twice
Their attorney David Woodruff has accused nurse anesthetist Rex Meeker of botching Emmalyn’s anaesthestia, and told KDVR: ‘What should have been a very standard procedure turned into a nightmare for her and her family
‘She was left unobserved. No one watched her for about 15 minutes.’
On realizing Emmalyn was in medical distress, staff reportedly began CPR to restore her heartbeat – but are accused of failing to dial 911 for a further five-and-a-half hours.
The youngster never regained consciousness.
Recalling what one of the doctors said to her after the surgery finished, Fam said: ‘The doctor finally came back out to tell me that I wasn’t able to go back there to check up on her.
‘She’s doing fine and she’s young, maybe that’s the reason why she’s taking longer to wake up.’
Meeker and plastic surgeon Dr Geoffrey Kim are both being sued for gross negligence at the Arapahoe County Court.
A lawyer for Meeker says his actions were ‘within the standard of care.’
Meeker was previously sued in 2009 by a man called John Harty whose wife Paula died of brain damage during a breast enhancement surgery in which Meeker also acted as nurse anesthetist.
That case was settled confidentially in 2012.
Dr Kim has declined to comment on the lawsuit against him.
Around 300,000 Americans have breast enhancement surgery every year. The procedure is normally straightforward, with patients able to go home the same day, but carries the same risks as any other surgery carried out under general anesthesia.
