Lucas Torreira is a "great player" who has an Arsenal future despite being loaned out according to Gilberto Silva.

The Uruguayan moved to the Emirates in 2018 but after two years and two managers has been sent away for the year.

Atletico Madrid are enjoying Torreira's services and the midfield could yet return with a La Liga winners medal.

The 24-year-old was signed by Unai Emery and didn't enjoy the same opportunities once Mike Arteta replaced him.

Torreira's performances were inconsistent last term which no doubt contributed to his temporary move away.

Lucas Torreira struggled for minutes at points last season

But Gilberto, an integral part of Arsenal's Invincibles, is confident the combative midfielder will return and come good.

He told Ladbrokes: “I think Torreira had a good start to his career at Arsenal.

“He played some really good games but then last season he played some not-so-good games and was dropped to the bench as a result.

“In the end he moved to Atletico Madrid on loan but I still believe he has a chance at Arsenal.

“At some point players will believe they don’t have a chance at a team - especially when a new manager comes in.

The midfielder has headed to Spain for the season

“But Torreira definitely has quality. He’s a great player.”

Torreira has made seven appearances in all competitions for the Spanish side.

But the player's father stoked the fire with Arteta when he claimed his son sought a move away because he didn't feel valued by the Gunners boss.

"Lucas is honest and wants to leave his soul on the pitch," he said.

"But that is defined by the coaches and for the current Arsenal manager he didn’t count.

"For a 24-year-old boy, recognised in Uruguay and around the world, the most necessary thing is to play."
