Game of Thrones could be returning with a deal for a prequel reportedly being finalised with HBO.

It has been reported that the prequel will be set 300 years before the beginning of the story that was told over eight award-winning seasons, and will focus on the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.

Deadline has reported that A Song of Ice and Fire author, George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal will serve as the writers and creators of the prequel.

The story will largely be based on Fire & Blood, which is one of Martin's book.

There is bad news for fans of one of the Targaryens allies as Martin has said that this prequel will predate when dragons came into their lives, but he has said there will be other creatures that will soon become fan favourites.

This is not the only prequel that is being mooted with three others already further forward in development with HBO.

The pilot episode of a series that takes place around 5,000 years before we know the story, has been filmed in Northern Ireland over the summer.

The prequel will be set 300 years before GoT

Casey Bloys, who is President of HBO Programming said: "The shooting has wrapped, it looks really good, the cast was amazing."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, 70-year-old Martin has said previously that the Stark family will feature but not so certain that the Lannisters will be around.

It will tell the story of the Targaryen family

He said: "The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Casterly Rock is certainly there.

"It’s like the Rock of Gibraltar. It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys - for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones."

There are also one of the most chilling foes still there though, as Martin confirmed that the White Walkers will be a danger.

There will be no dragons

Martin said: “Obviously the White Walkers are here - or as they’re called in my books, The Others - and that will be an aspect of it.

"There are things like direwolves and mammoths.”

The prequel that has been filmed will star Oscar nominee Naomi Watts and has been created by Kick Ass writer Jane Goldman along with Martin.

Damon Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are responsible for the Game of Thrones series, are not involved in the prequel.
