Manchester City can complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes on Wednesday as they know they would move top of the Premier League by beating Aston Villa on Wednesday.
City were written out of the title race by some only last month, but a run of five straight wins in the league, as part of a wider run of fifteen games unbeaten in all competitions, has pushed the Blues into second in the league.
Three points at home to Villa will temporarily put City top of the table, with Manchester United then needing to beat Fulham to re-take top spot later in the evening.
With that tantalising prospect in mind, Pep Guardiola is likely to give the Villa game the seriousness it deserves following the professional win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.
In defence, John Stones and Ruben Dias are in undroppable form, and depending on their fitness they would be expected to continue with their impressive run of clean sheets when paired together.
The late consolation for Chelsea at the start of the month remains the only goal they have conceded as a duo - and they have never conceded when both playing and Ederson is also in the side.
Joao Cancelo dropped to the bench against Crystal Palace but could be useful in combating Jack Grealish given his recent tendency to move in-field, just like Grealish does from that wing. Aleks Zinchenko has done well against some tricky wingers in recent weeks, and should get the chance to continue.
In midfield, Rodri was given a rare night off on Sunday, so he is likely to be recalled against Villa's threatening attacking midfielders. Kevin De Bruyne, if fit, is an obvious choice, as is Ilkay Gundogan who continued his impressive scoring spell against Palace.
In attack, Phil Foden can return on the left after dropping to the bench at the weekend, moving Raheem Sterling over to the right, who will be looking to build on his first goal in five outings as he curled in a lovely late free kick. With Sergio Aguero still isolating, Gabriel Jesus should continue upfront against the side he scored once against last season and assisted twice in the two league meetings.
Man City predicted team vs Aston Villa: Ederson; Cancelo, Stones, Dias, Zinchenko; Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan; Foden, Sterling, Jesus.
