After a 12-month delay, EURO 2020 finally got under way on Friday evening as Italy dismantled Turkey in a 3-0 win at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

As Newcastle United prepare for the 2021/22 Premier League season, and Wednesday's fixture announcement, the Magpies' primary focus is on improving their squad in the summer transfer window.

So while the success of Martin Dubravka (Slovakia), Emil Krafth (Sweden), Fabian Schar (Switzerland) and Ryan Fraser (Scotland) at this summer's competition will be of great importance to Steve Bruce, how some potential targets fare will be of greater importance to the clubs' recruitment team.

As such, Chronicle Live has picked out five potential transfer targets United will be keeping a keen eye on across the next month.

Ozan Kabak (Turkey)

Newcastle United may have to commit to an £18million deal if they decide to revive their interest in Ozan Kabak.

The Turkey centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Liverpool after opting for Merseyside instead of St James' Park after interest from Steve Bruce.

However, Liverpool have snubbed the chance to turn Kabak's loan deal into a permanent arrangement and he is now back on the market.

His representatives are looking for a new club for the defender but his demand for £80,000 per week could put off the Magpies.

A loan deal with an £18million clause at the end of it is being offered to clubs around Europe.

His performances at EURO 2020 will go some way to convincing clubs he is worthy of such a hefty financial investment although he was left out of Turkey's opening day defeat in favour of Juventus' Merih Demiral and Leicester's Caglar Soyuncu.

Wout Weghorst (Netherlands)

Newcastle United and West Ham are said to be interested in Wout Weghorst, according to the Athletic.

The 28-year-old hit 20 goals for Wolfsburg last season and is thought to be available this summer, despite the Wolves qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The targetman is set to lead the line for the Netherlands in EURO 2020 and will hope to replicate his prolific form at club level for the national team.

Attila Szalai (Hungary)

Szalai only joined Fenerbahce in the January transfer window from Cypriot Side Apollon Limassol but has made an immediate impact in the Turkish Super Lig.

The likes of Leicester and Napoli have been linked with the 23-year-old since and according to Blikk, (via Sport Witness ), the Magpies and Aston Villa are set to enter the race to sign the 13-cap Hungary international.

Hungary find themselves in a group with France, Portugal and Germany at EURO 2020 in what is sure to be a test of the Fener defender's credentials at the highest level.

Hakan Calhanoglu (Turkey)

Calhanoglu is set to be a free agent next month after helping AC Milan to Champions League qualification this season.

He will hope performances in EURO 2020 will put him in the shop window for some of Europe's biggest clubs but Newcastle will likely watch on with interest.

The Magpies have long since tracked the 27-year-old and Chronicle Live reported back in February that they were monitoring the former Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen star's situation.

Nuno Mendes (Portugal)

A report from Portuguese title O Jogo in March claimed Newcastle, Burnley and Napoli are all monitoring the 21-year-old.

The Portugal under-21 international is highly rated and broke into Benfica's first team squad last season.

His form has been so good, in fact, that he has forced his way into the Portugal squad for EURO 2020 and he will hope to showcase his talents on the biggest stage.
