Family’s heartbreak after girl, 7, dies of flu just days before Christmas


A GIRL of seven has died of flu.

Isabella Lagronova fell ill the day after dressing in a reindeer sweater for Christmas jumper day.

She collapsed at home last Sunday and was put on life support in hospital in Newcastle.

But on Tuesday Isabella was declared brain dead by doctors and died in mum Zdena’s arms.

Zdena, 33, of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, said: “My heart is dead.

“She was my Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active.

The flu vaccine reduces the risk of catching flu, as well as spreading it to others.

It's more effective to get the vaccine before the start of the flu season (December to March).

“Everybody is broken. No-one can believe it.”

Zdena lives with her mum, Zdenka, 59 and dad Lubomir, 55.

The family were told Isabella had influenza B.

Her funeral will be in the Czech Republic.

Zdena said: “We took the Christmas decorations down because it doesn’t feel right when Isabella’s not here anymore.”

Catherine Ritchie, headteacher at Lingey House Primary School, where Isabella was a pupil, said: "Isabella was much loved by the whole school community.

"She was the most kind, funny and caring little girl and was highly thought of by her friends.

"She had an infectious laugh and touched everyone she met.

"She will never be forgotten."
