I get locked down...but I get up again

WE’VE all seen Cool Runnings. We know it’s tough for the Jamaica bobsled team to train at the best of times.

With lockdown, they didn’t have a snowball in Hell’s chance of being competition-ready.

But, not to be defeated, one of the best stories of the summer was watching Shanwayne Stephens and Nimroy Turgott pushing a Mini around Peterborough for resistance training.

Now Shanwayne is back at it again, on the snowy mountain ranges of Hemel Hempstead.

This time the RAF Regiment Gunner is using a Mini as a workout with new team-mates Dyneal Fessal and Matthew Wallace, recruited from Jamaica’s Sevens rugby team. Nimroy is stuck at home in Jamaica.

They have a year to prepare for qualifying for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Shanwayne said: “We want to get the four-man team going again. Matthew and Dyneal have never been in a blobsled – or even seen a bobsled – so we’re focusing on gelling as a team and getting them up to speed.

“We have a big task ahead of us but it is doable.

“Just being on ice is completely different to training in the summer.

“The toll on your body is completely different, you use energy in different ways, so today’s been fun and it’s good to get out and get to know each other.

“It’s only –3C in here. That’s pretty mild compared to what we’re normally in – and they’re already complaining about the cold.”

So jumping in a fibreglass bathtub to bomb down a frozen drainpipe should be easy, then? Former 100-metre sprinter Matthew said: “I’ve done quite a lot of research into it.

“They’re doing around 80mph and pulling 4 to 5G. That sounds really cool to me.”

Gym manager Dyneal, a former 400-metre runner, added: “It’s nervous excitement, really.

“I’m always up for trying new things and bobsled incorporates power and explosiveness.

“This is serious. We are all big competitors, whichever sport we take up.”

I wouldn’t bet against them making Beijing, especially if they can raise funds for a new sled for the Europa Cup races this winter.

Let’s finish with a sentence or two about the Mini.

Shanwayne said: “Everyone is loving the car. We keep getting beeps and smiles wherever we go.

“I was pushing it up and down the street the other day, working the legs, and a van driver stopped to help. He thought we’d broken down.”

No mate.

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it’s bobsled time.
