England's worst Covid hotspot has more than double the infection rate of the second area after an alarming rise in new cases.

Latest Public Health England reveal Bolton is by far the worst-hit of the country's towns and cities.

In the seven days to Friday, 867 people in the Greater Manchester town tested positive - raising its infection rate from 150.2 cases per 100,000 people to 301.5.

It has been worst hit by the Indian variant of the virus - which could scupper plans to fully reopen the country on June 21.

Blackburn with Darwen, in second place, has a rate of 131.6 cases per 100,000, up from 86.2 the previous week.

Out of England's 315 local authority areas, 143 saw a rise in new cases while 154 recorded a drop and 18 remained the same.

Bedford, which has the third highest infection rate in England, now has 128.1 cases per 100,000, nearly double last week's rate of 64.6.

Figures released earlier today that one or more cases of the Indian variant - believed to be more transmissible than the Kent strain which prompted England to be plunged into lockdown - have been detected in 108 local authority areas.

Boris Johnson has admitted that the variant could scupper his 'roadmap', which would see all coronavirus restrictions lifted next month.

Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty has said the Indian variant is expected to eventually become most dominant strain of Covid-19 in the UK.

Reports in The Times and Politico say the government is eyeing plans for a return to a new Covid ‘tier’ system as fears mount over the variant.

Yesterday Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the majority of those admitted to hospital with the Indian variant are of an age which makes them eligible to get the virus, but the patients had not.

The Health Secretary said of the 18 hospitalised patients, five had had a single dose of the jab, one had had a second dose - and 12 had not been vaccinated at all.

He said: "This shows the new variant is not tending to penetrate into older, vaccinated groups and it underlines again the importance of getting the jab especially - but not only - amongst the vulnerable age groups."
