Emmerdale actor Jonathan Wrather has hinted that rapist Pierce Harris could embark on a deluded mission to "save" Rhona - by becoming a serial killer.

The lawyer-turned-convict returned to the Dales after two years last night as it was revealed that he had murdered Graham Foster by bashing his skull in.

But it looks as though his reign of terror might only have just begun by killing her boyfriend.

Speaking at a live press event, actor Jonathan, who has reprised his role as Rhona's villainous ex, spoke about Pierce's state of mind.

He said: "He has a logic to what he has done. He is on a crusade. He has a sociopath or psychopath way of absolving oneself from the reality – he’s very good at that.

He murdered Graham in cold blood

"He rescues Rhona – if a few people take a hit, so be it. He is fixated on her. It’s the least he can do given their past, that’s his main focus."

Pierce was jailed in 2017 after he was found guilty of raping wife Rhona on their wedding day.

However back in December last year, Rhona discovered that he was up for parole.

"He’s served his time in prison but I imagine he has been getting himself better and keeping his head down," actor Jonathan explained. "In prison, someone like him, it would be terrifying in that alien environment.

"He didn’t cope very well with it all but he is a shrewd operator but probably quite tough. He has been regrouping."

Asked whether Pierce has any regrets about what he had done, he said: "Yeah. When we see him, I think he feels like he was on the road to recovery and he kind of wants to make amends.

"He wasn’t planning this, none of it was planned. He feels a victim of circumstance."

He added: "He feels Graham was the catalyst for what happens. He writes his own end effectively. If he had just let it go, he probably would never have seen Pierce.

Rhona will be horrified to discover that her ex-husband is back

"Graham is to blame in Pierce’s mind – he feels judged and humiliated. No-one has the right to do that when he is getting his life on track he feels.

"He had no intention of contacting Rhona, he was just getting on with it."

Questioned on what he believed that Pierce's motive was, he said: "He wants to rescue Rhona. He knows he has been a violent man, coercive, abusive on an emotional level but he can see Graham is a danger to Rhona.

"He reads these characters well from experience including from in prison. He wants to save Rhona for a very poor decision, like she did with him. He’s on a moral crusade – he’s her so called knight in shining armour."

So how will Pierce be able to move on?

"For him, it’s justifiable," said Jonathan. "He’s helped her and saved her. Somehow he can compute that and deal with that somewhere in his conscience.

"Although that’s pretty skewed. For him, he’s provided a service and changed her life for the better, he believes."
