Emmerdale fans were left gobsmacked, with many cheering, on Wednesday night as a huge twist aired.

Belle Dingle was confirmed to have double-crossed lover Jamie Tate it would seem, as she grassed him up to the police over the recent hit-and-run.

Just as brother Cain Dingle prepared to hurt him with a bat, Belle pleaded with him not to.

But it turned it out she wasn't protecting Jamie at all, and she'd already called the police to their location after finally tracking down the evidence that would link him to the crime.

Belle had ditched her whole family for Jamie, despite them not being accepting of the romance due to their long-running feud with the Tate family.

Emmerdale appeared to confirm Belle Dingle was using Jamie Tate

What Cain didn't know until Wednesday though was that Jamie was the driver who knocked down and almost killed his wife Moira recently.

To learn Belle could stand by him even after this, he was horrified and determined to kill Jamie.

But Belle begged him to stop, just moments after Jamie had taken her to the location where the parts of his car, damaged in the crash, had been hidden.

Jamie led Belle straight to the evidence

Knowing they were the only thing linking him to the crime, his mum Kim Tate had them dumped in the lake.

After weeks of trying to find out where he had hidden them, a desperate Jamie finally told Belle the location on Wednesday as she informed him Cain would be on his way to kill him.

Reluctant to tell Belle the truth, he finally told her the location and they raced there to check all was hidden.

She then began acting weird, almost as though she was hiding something - with that seemingly revealed when Cain arrived.

As he went in for the kill, Belle told him she was protecting him not Jamie, before confessing she had called the police.

She brutally turned towards Jamie and told him she'd called the police on him, to arrest him for the hit-and-run.

Has Belle been fooling Jamie all along?

It would seem she asked for the lake details just to inform them, and lead them to the evidence.

But was this Belle's plan all along, and is she really planning revenge on him or could she simply not take the guilt anymore?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
