Elderly woman, 77, hit by van in car park dies seven days after 'tragic' incident

A pensioner has tragically died seven days after being hit by a van in a car park.

Shortly after 2.45pm on January 27, police received reports of a horrific smash involving a van and an old woman.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, where a red and white Volkswagen van had hit a 77-year-old woman.

Despite the pensioner being rushed to hospital for treatment of the serious injuries she suffered, she sadly died on Friday, after over a week of battling for her life.

The elderly woman’s next of kin are being supported by specialist officers and the van driver is cooperating with police.

But police still are working to confirm the exact circumstances that led up to her death.

As inquiries into the smash continue, police launched another appeal for witnesses to contact them.

Sergeant Andrew Ferguson, of Northumbria Police's Motor Patrols Department, said: "This is a tragic incident that has sadly seen a woman lose her life and our thoughts are very much with her family.

"We are continuing to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision and would like any witnesses who have not yet been in touch to please come forward.

"We are also keen for the public to provide any dashcam footage, especially if they saw the vehicle – a red and white VW Crafter van – in the area before or after 2.45pm on January 27.

"Your information, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, could prove to be key."
