Preston North End have one space left in their 25-man Championship squad and that selection may now be straightforward for head coach Frankie McAvoy.

The Lilywhites left one space free earlier this month, with six senior players not picked in the squad for league action.

Paul Huntington, Connor Ripley, Joe Rafferty, Josh Harrop, Jamie Thomas and the injured Izzy Brown were those players.

However, in PNE's 4-1 midweek win over Cheltenham Town in the Carabao Cup, two of the starting XI left the field in the first-half due to injury.

New signing Connor Wickham lasted five minutes on his first start for the club, with a frustrating hamstring injury picked up very early on in the game.

But the more serious concern lay with centre-back Liam Lindsay, who was on the receiving end of a strong challenge and took a nasty blow to the knee.

And with the worry over the Scotsman, it may see PNE bring fan-favourite Paul Huntington in, as the last member of the 25-man squad through to January.

Speaking about the injuries after Tuesday night's cup victory, McAvoy said: "They don't look too good if I'm being honest.

"Both will get scanned tomorrow and we'll see how they Connor's comes back - it's a hammy (hamstring).

"He went to kick, he stretched and as the boy caught him, he fully stretched it.

"Liam's knee injury doesn't look too good to be honest, the guy has gone right through him - he's in a bit of pain.

"We are starting to get a few knocks at the moment; we don't need any more injuries.

"In terms of the squad, I just need to make sure I get the right balance and we have two guys getting scanned tomorrow who are in that 25-man squad.

"We just need to make sure that when I fill that final slot, it is done for Preston North End's benefit - sometimes you have to put emotion out of the window."
