Manchester United fans will appreciate what Donny van de Beek did after the full-time whistle against Liverpool.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named an unchanged team from the United side that completed a comeback against Atalanta in midweek and that meant Van de Beek started on the bench again, with Scott McTominay and Fred beginning the game in the double pivot.

The United boss' tactics and team selection emphatically failed as Liverpool ran riot to win 5-0 at Old Trafford, though.

United have failed to control a game in midfield all season and they were once again dominated in the centre of the pitch.

Van de Beek's £40m arrival from Ajax last summer was widely regarded as quite the coup, however, the Dutchman's dream move to United has turned into a nightmare and he was forced to helplessly watch on again as his teammates looked utterly inferior.

Regardless of consistently being left on the sidelines by Solskjaer, Van de Beek showed his dedication after the heavy Liverpool defeat by going back out onto the pitch when Old Trafford had long been empty to do training runs with a coach.

Despite United's midfield problems, Solskjaer has handed Van de Beek a total of just 140 minutes on the pitch this season.

Supporters will hope that Sunday's debacle against may finally be the prompt that Solskjaer needs to give Van de Beek a chance.
