Diego Simeone ‘set to make shock U-turn and sign new Atletico Madrid deal until 2024’ – but will have to cut £28m wages

DIEGO SIMEONE is set to commit his future to Atletico Madrid until 2024, according to reports.

The Argentine put Premier League clubs on alert by hinting it could be his last season at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Simeone, 50, is approaching his tenth anniversary in charge of the LaLiga leaders.

He is currently one of the highest paid managers in world football pocketing a staggering £28million-a-year until 2022.

And reports in AS suggest he is set to extend that contract until 2024 but will be forced to take a significant wage cuts.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc for the finances of clubs across Europe with many players forced to accept pay cuts.

Simeone is hailed as a legend at Atleti following his success since his appointment in 2011.

They won their first league title for 18 years in 2014 and he also guided them to two Champions League finals.

Simeone has also won the Europa League on two occasions and his side are four points clear at the top of LaLiga this season.

Doubts over his future were raised after their shock cup exit to third-tier Cornella earlier this month.

He initially said the club will hope to improve 'if we are still here next year.'

Simeone then said: "Things change all the time in football, and you have to be open to all possibilities. I'm very happy here but you have to be open to whatever the club decides."
