'Denying Scotland's ability to prosper!' Sturgeon mocked as Scots lose out on Freeports

Sturgeon ‘always runs to Westminster for help’ says Calvin Robinson

SNP ministers stormed out of talks with UK officials this week after failing to reach a joint agreement for two new freeports for Scotland. The UK officials had been discussing two freeports in Scotland as part of Boris Johnson’s post-Brexit trade drive. Freeports receive significant tax breaks and could create thousands of jobs and boost local economies as they can encompass an area of 27 miles in diameter.

The SNP ministers obstructed the formulation of two freeports for Scotland when they demanded that they should be rebranded “greenports” north of the Border.

The SNP added that operators within these freeports must agree to certain environmental and employment standards.

One reader called 'hotdog007' fumed and stated: "So the SNP have rejected the idea of Freeports because they don't meet Scotland's needs.

"Have you ever heard such rubbish?

"She is denying Scotland the ability to prosper even more because it's a UK government initiative.

"The Scots really are being taken for fools by the SNP."

Another reader, 'UKpatriot48', commented: "Scotland, you deserve better.

"She's grinding Scotland into the ground."

An reader, 'Tarquini78', then recommended a location for a Scottish freeport and commented, "Aberdeen would be good, particularly as it was wanting independence from Scotland!"

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced the formation of new freeports in the Government's spring budget.

He said they would become “special economic zones with different rules to make it easier and cheaper to do business”.

These freeports are to have simpler planning procedures, cheaper customs with favourable tariffs, VAT or duties and lower taxes.

They are also to have “tax breaks to encourage construction, private investment and job creation”.

England is set to get eight new freeports in the post-Brexit era.

The locations of the freeports that were announced in the March 2021 Budget were at East Midlands Airport, Felixstowe and Harwich, Humber region, Liverpool City Region, Plymouth, Solent, Thames and Teesside.

The UK hopes to attract international businesses to set up in domestic freeports.

There are currently about 80 freeports dotted around the EU, and post-Brexit Britain could apply greater customs and tax breaks with the hubs located within the UK.
