David Starkey resigns honorary Cambridge fellowship over his ‘damn blacks’ racist comments

He had caused fury by saying: “Slavery was not genocide, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many damn blacks in Africa or in Britain, would there?”

Fitzwilliam College said it would not tolerate racism, adding that honorary fellows were expected to uphold its values.

Canterbury Christ Church University, Kent, also terminated Mr Starkey’s role as visiting professor over his “completely unacceptable” remarks made in an interview broadcast on YouTube.

Ex-Chancellor Sajid Javid said they were a “reminder of appalling views that still exist”.

Mr Starkey, 75, was contacted for comment
