George Floyd’s six-year-old daughter does not know how her father died, but she has seen the global movement sparked in his name and realizes her ‘dad changed the world.’
Floyd’s daughter Gianna cheered the powerful statement during a recent demonstration in Minneapolis, Minnesota over the death of her father, who died on Memorial Day after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes despite pleas that he could not breathe.
Gianna and her mother, Roxie Washington, recently spoke on Good Morning America about Floyd’s death, which left the little girl without her father. Washington said she has been unable to explain to her daughter how her father was killed after his last moments alive were caught on camera, sparking outrage throughout the world.
‘She said, ” hear them. I hear them saying my daddy’s name.” She doesn’t know what happened,’ Washington said.
‘I told her that her died died because he couldn’t breathe.’
When asked what she wants people to know about her father, Gianna said, ‘Kinda that I miss him’ and that she will remember him as a good dad who used to play with her ‘all day long.’
‘I want everybody to know that this is what those officers took,’ Washington said at a news conference in Minneapolis with her daughter. on Tuesday.
‘Gianna does not have a father He will never see her grow up, graduate, he will never walk her down the aisle.’
‘If there’s a problem she’s having and she needs her dad, she does not have that anymore. I’m here for my baby, and I’m here for him. I want justice for him because he was good. No matter what anybody thinks, he was good.’
On Monday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Floyd’s death a homicide and said the 46-year-old ‘experience a cardiopulmonary arrest by being restrained by law enforcement officers(s)’
Chauvin, the officer seen with his knee directly on Floyd’s neck, has since been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter and was one of four officers fired for their involvement in Floyd’s death. However, Chauvin is the only one who has been charged so far.
Floyd’s family has since called for the charges to get upgraded to first-degree murder and their call has been amplified by protesters across the globe demanding justice for Floyd’s death.
