Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes Dean Henderson’s presence this season will bring the best out of David de Gea.

There was plenty of debate about who would be United’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for De Gea for his side’s opening game of the campaign.

The Spanish goalkeeper was heavily scrutinised last season following several notable errors, and Henderson's outstanding displays on loan at Sheffield United only piled further pressure on the Spaniard.

However, Fletcher believes Henderson providing De Gea with some competition could mean a swing in form for the Spain goalkeeper.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Fletcher said: “He’s gone away to Sheffield United and did fantastic in the Championship and the Premier League last year.

“David de Gea has a real challenge on his hands now, he’s a genuine contender," Fletcher said. "Romero was almost happy to be second-choice.

“Dean Henderson wants to be Man United’s number one - he’s got the confidence, he’s got the arrogance, he believes in himself. He backs himself and it’s going to bring out the best out of David De Gea.”
