McLaren embarrassed byDaniel Ricciardo's slow start to the team on day one.
The Australian has been 18 months into his team career at Woking and has yet to find real momentum. Ricciardo's situation looks bleak, even ignoring the current circus surrounding his future with Oscar Piastri waiting in the wings.
As his 33-year-old entered summer vacation, he looked back at the same time period 12 months ago. This was much needed after the shock to the system. Instead of adapting quickly to the new car as expected, he consistently outperformed his Norris and failed to show winner form in multiple races.
"This time last year was probably a little more head scratching from everyone," he told Racer. "I think it's because...really, they expected me to kick in on the team.
" W-I'm just guessing, but probably too much energy was spent on why and this and that before it was like, "What do we need to do now?"
Ricardo was speaking before the start of the Piastri saga. responded with a defiant message.On social media, he promised to confirm his current contract, which ends after the 2023 season.

Ricciardo was told by his team that he wanted to replace him a year early and walk away.But things may not be so simple for McLaren. He could face a legal battle with Alpine over custody of Piastri. Both teams believe they have a valid contract with the F2 champion. In recent weeks, at least he has four teams contacting his eight-time race winner, andAlpine himself is willing to open his arms if Piastri cannot be kept.within their reach.
