Parents in Lancashire have been warned by experts about a disturbing new trend on social media platform TikTok.

The warning relates to a new hair trend sweeping the social media which doesn't just make gross watching, it's also dangerous.

Called 'scalp popping,' the trend sees people pulling on a chunk of hair so hard that it creates a popping sound on the skull.

Healthcare experts and medical professionals have chimed in to urge people to not participate in the trend - for the good of their health.

They have told parents to stay vigilant, and if they spot signs of it, to nip it in the bud sharpish, BirminghamLive reports.

"Firstly you can easily tear the inside of the scalp which can lead to bleeding and possible infections, it can become sore and extremely uncomfortable," Dr Ross Perry, Medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics told Tyla.

"It can also cause damage to the hair follicle on a long term basis which could lead to hair loss and let’s not forget damage to the neck and head from the force of the hair being pulled."

But despite the warnings, the trend on TikTok has become one of the most popular of the moment.

One viral video of the trend doing the rounds on social media shows a barber performing the act on their client had garnered over 1.7 million views..
