Dancing on Ice’s Ashley Banjo admits controversial BLM performance on Britain’s Got Talent divided his own family

DANCING On Ice judge Ashley Banjo has revealed his Black Lives Matter performance caused “division” within his family.

Ashley, 32, performed a Black Lives Matter-themed routine on Britain’s Got Talent in September, alongside his dance troupe Diversity.

The performance was deemed controversial after receiving a whopping 31,000 Ofcom complaints.

Now, months later, the dancer has confessed that the performance was even considered controversial amongst his own relatives.

He told the Daily Star: “Even among my own family and friends the performance sparked conversation.

“There has been some negativity with my family. There was division.

“People didn’t directly disagree with the performance but there was a conversation about if it was really necessary. I saw it happen in my own household.”

Dad-of-two Ashley also revealed that there are people he knows who “haven’t spoken [to him] at all” since the episode aired.

He also added he still receives online abuse related to the performance to this day.

This is despite the fact that Ofcom decided not to action on the complaints – and ITV fully throwing their support behind the star.

Diversity, which Ashley founded and remains the leader of, first shot to fame on Britain’s Got Talent’s third series in 2009.

The group went on to win their series, later touring the country in their show Limitless.

Ashley continued to find success on TV – this time judging budding acts on Sky One’s Got To Dance and co-hosting BBC One game show Can’t Touch This.

He’s long been an ITV favourite, too, acting as a judge on Dance Dance Dance and Dancing On Ice, later stepping in for Simon Cowell on BGT’s 14th series last year.

Diversity’s Ashley Banjo says ‘hate’ from BGT viewers and 24,500 complaints convinced him to ramp up his BLM campaign
