A father was shot dead after taking his 15 year-old daughter to brawl with other teenagers, investigators say. Brandon Curtis, 35, was killed in Houston, Texas, on Friday after he allegedly joined in the fight, and was gunned down by another adult.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted afterwards: ‘Brandon Curtis, an adult male, had gone to the location w(ith) his juvenile daughter so she could fight other juveniles. During the fight, several other people, including juveniles became involved in the fight.

‘Curtis joined the fight & is reported to have struck one of the juveniles several times. The juvenile’s brother, J Richardson, a resident at the location, observed this happening & shot Curtis in defense of his brother. Curtis was pronounced deceased.

Richardson told sheriff’s deputies he had been acting in self-defense, and has not been charged. The investigation into Curtis’s death is continuing, and will be passed to prosecutors once completed.

Curtis’s grieving family have since contested Sheriff Gonzalez’s claims.

They say that the dead dad was actually hoping to talk to a teenage boy’s parents about bullying his daughter had endured on social media.

His wife Shantal Harris told KTRK: ‘I don’t feel like it’s right to let that come out like that. I’m angry. I’m angry about it. I know my husband. My husband is not like that.’

The widow said her daughter had been taunted over text at the weekend with a text saying: ‘We all had a fight and killed dey (sic) daddy.’

She said Curtis had previously spoken to the family about their son, and had hoped to do so again on the evening of his death.

Harris continued: ‘When he left from here, my husband went to go resolve the issue. He wanted to go speak to the parent.

‘For them to claim self-defense, it’s sickening.’

One of Curtis’s sisters, Jeran Perkins, also disputed claims about his death, saying: ‘My brother would never put a hand on a child. We want justice.’

Another sibling, Robinique Miles, has joined in calls for charges to be brought, saying of her brother’s killer: ‘They think it’s a joke.’
