Coronavirus cases have rocketed up by ten times in a town in one week amid a worrying surge that has seen it become the new Covid capital of England.

The number of cases have shot up from 17 per 100,000 people in Erewash in the seven days to April 29, to 185/100,000 a week later.

As a result of the huge ten fold increase in just a week the Derbyshire town tops a list of 107 places in England which saw their rates spike.

Bolton in Greater Manchester has the second highest rate, up from 70.2 to 133.5, with 384 new cases.

Elsewhere, Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire has the third highest, up from 50.1 to 84.8, with 127 new cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 107 (34 per cent) have seen a rise in rates, 196 (62 per cent) have seen a fall and 12 are unchanged.

The rising figures are not necessarily a reason for people to be concerned quite yet.

Two weeks ago on April 27 more than half of the areas in England saw their case rate rise.

Despite this coronavirus hospitalisations and deaths continue to be on a downwards trajectory however, in no small part due to the coronavirus vaccine rollout - which significantly reduces the risk of death.

More than 35 million people - or over half of all UK adults - have now received a first dose of a vaccine nearly 18 million people have had a second.

Here is the list of towns in full.
