England's three worst coronavirus hotspots have seen a week-on-week rise in cases - despite most towns and cities recording drops during lockdown.

Swale in Kent, Boston in Lincolnshire and Medway, also in Kent, have the country's highest infection rates, latest Public Health England figures show.

They are in a minority of areas where the number of people testing positive rose in the seven days to Saturday, the latest data available.

Maidstone, Lincoln and Woking also saw a surge in new cases ahead of nationwide restrictions being lifted.

But there is encouraging news as 281 of 315 local authority areas recorded a drop in new cases.

Tier 3 Kent has some of the highest infection rates in the country

Today 99% of people in England woke up to life in the top two tiers after Boris Johnson survived a Tory rebellion to bring his new system into place.

Redbridge, in London, has the highest infection rate of all areas in Tier 2, after it rose slightly from 297.5 per 100,000 to 305.4, lifting it to 12th in the country.

Basildon in Essex, in 13th place, was also spared being put into the highest tier, despite its rate rising above 300.

By comparison Stratford-upon-Avon, which is in Tier 3, has a rate of 66.9 per 100,000 people.

Most of England is now is the top two tiers after lockdown ended

Yesterday the Mirror revealed that 85 towns and cities had seen a rise in new cases during England's second national lockdown.

Earlier today the UK's Covid-19 death toll rose by 648, with 16,170 people testing positive.

It means 59,699 people have died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus result since the start of the pandemic.

But there has been good news in the form of a Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech, which has been approved for use in the UK - paving the way for mass vaccination to start.

The UK will be the first country to deploy a clinically authorised coronavirus vaccine, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said today.

Mr Hancock said: "As we know from earlier announcements, this vaccine is effective.

"The MHRA have approved it as clinically safe. And we have a vaccine, so it's very good news."

The UK is the first country to approve a coronavirus vaccine

But England's deputy chief medical officer, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam warned that we may never fully get rid of Covid-19.

He said: "Everyone wants social distancing to come to an end - we are fed-up with it.

"Nobody wants lockdowns and to see the damage they do. But if you want that dream to come true as quickly as it can come true, then you you have to take the vaccine when it is offered to you.

"Low uptake will almost certainly make restrictions last longer."
