Covid-19 rules and measures are still in place in the UK's supermarkets, with lockdown now four weeks away.

The UK was set to remove Covid-19 restrictions on Monday June 21, but Boris Johnson's Government chose to delay the end of lockdown by four weeks, to Monday July 19.

Even if lockdown does end in July, supermarkets may choose to retain some of the measures they have brought in to protect customers and staff during the coronavirus pandemic. At the very least, we can expect to see them for the next four weeks.

Some of the measures introduced during the height of the Covid crisis have been relaxed. Tesco, for example, no longer asks customers to follow a one-way route, and door greeters have disappeared from some supermarkets.

Below, we take a look at some of the Covid-19 rules for shoppers and safety measures in place in UK supermarkets.

As with every business, customers shopping in Aldi must wear a face covering unless they are exempt. "Those who refuse to wear a face covering, without medical exemption, will not be allowed in store," its website states.

Shoppers are asked to shop alone if possible.

A traffic light system is used to let customers know when they can enter the store. If the shop is too busy, then the light will show red and the next customer will be asked to wait outside until another customer leaves.

There are trolley and basket cleaning stations, which customers are advised to use before they start their shop. There are social distance markers in-store to help customers keep a safe distance.

Contactless and card payments are preferred, with a limit of £45 for contactless transactions.


Face masks are mandatory inside Asda supermarkets, other than for customers who are exempt. Customers who forget theirs will be offered a packet of masks at the door, which they can pay for with their shopping. Shop alone when possible.

Marshals at the store entrance will provide sanitised baskets or trolleys to customers, and manage the number of customers in store. Trolleys and baskets are also coated with an antimicrobial surface that limits the spread of bacteria.

Contactless payment is preferred with a limit of £45.


Face masks are mandatory and masks are available at the entrance which you can pay for at checkout. Customers are asked to clean their trolleys and baskets at the cleaning station in the store entrance before they shop.

Lidl asks customers to use the disposable gloves provided and the tongs when picking items in the bakery aisle.

Contactless payment is preferred, with a limit of £45 per contactless transaction.

Wear a face covering unless exempt. Shoppers who do not have one will be offered a face mask. Security will challenge those who don't wear one.

There are cleaning stations customers can use for trolleys and baskets at the entrance. Shoppers are asked to shop alone if they can.

The weekday NHS hour has ended, but NHS staff get half an hour priority shopping from 9am on Sundays.

Contactless payment preferred for transactions of up to £45.


Face covering masks are mandatory, security guards will challenge those who don't wear one.

Customers are asked to shop alone, again guards will challenge groups and may ask people to wait outside. A door greeter will manage the number of customers allowed in store at once.

The elderly, NHS and care workers can skip queues to get in stores as they are prioritised.

Contactless payment is preferred. Again the limit is £45.

A one in, one out system is in place, with traffic light signals at the door which are green when customers can come in, but red when they are required to wait outside. Priority in entry queue is for NHS, emergency service and care workers.
