Coronavirus cases are on the rise in more than a third of areas in England - just five days before the country unlocks further.

Figures correct as of May 8 show that 119 local authority regions have seen a surge in infections, or 38 per cent.

Erewash in Derbyshire continues as the country's Covid hotspot, with 237 new cases in the past seven days.

This is the equivalent to 205.4 infections per 100,000 people.

May 17 will see people across England allowed greater freedoms, including mixing indoors with up to six people and overnight stays.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned in the House of Commons on Wednesday that "the end of lockdown is not the end of the pandemic".

Data from the PA news agency shows that, of the 315 areas in England, 182 have seen a fall in cases, which is 58 per cent.

A total of 14 - or four per cent - remain unchanged.
