The pandemic has forced council meetings online and this has often gifted the internet with some hilarious footage of councillors losing it with each other.
Most famously, Handforth Parish council went viral when Jackie Weaver kept her cool and removed two yelling men from the Zoom meeting, proving that she did in fact have ‘authority’ there.
Several other councils have since followed suit with their own chaotic meetings, showing that local politics is much more exciting than one might think.
Now Sandbach Town Council in Cheshire – about 20 miles from Handforth -has had its own explosive session.
A meeting on Thursday night descended into chaos with one councillor calling his colleagues ‘gutter rats’ and a ‘bunch of ar**holes’.
Cllr David Jack, an independent, lost his cool during an argument about whether he should be kicked off two committees.
The 51-year-old told other councillors to ‘f**k off’ and branded Labour councillor Sam Corcoran ‘nothing but a liar’.
Cllr Corcoran had accused Cllr Jack of ‘breaching confidentiality’ by supposedly revealing staff payments on social media and publicly identifying someone who had made a formal complaint against him.
Cllr Jack scathingly responded: ‘You’re making allegations yet again, Sam. If you’ve got such accusations, take them to the monitoring officer – no such allegations have been upheld.
‘You, sir, are nothing but a liar. So, stop with the lies; stop with your games. I’m standing up to you, I do not fear you and I certainly do not respect you.’
After Cllr Corcoran’s motion was seconded by another member, the meeting descended further into turmoil as councillors indistinguishably shouted at each other.
During the commotion, Cllr Jack called them all ‘gutter rats’ and eventually Cllr Corcoran called for his opponent to be removed from the meeting.
Another Labour member, Richard Hoffman, seconded this and Cllr Jack responded ‘oh f**k off’, which angered the rest of the party more.
Cllr Hoffman scolded him: ‘You’ve really shown yourself now. You are a disgrace to the council.’
Eventually, Cllr Jack beat them all to it and announced he would be leaving himself but not before calling everyone a ‘bunch of ar**holes’.
He later told The Mirror he had meant to be muted when he told his colleagues to ‘f**k off’.
‘But these things happen and I make no apologies for it,’ he said.
In the same group, Cllr Jack reportedly posted a letter to ‘all Sandbach town councillors and press’ calling BLM a racist ‘ultra anarchist movement’ that was part of a ‘slip down the path to dictatorship and facism’, according to The Guardian.
He also allegedly banned all BLM posts to ‘stop giving oxygen to racists’.
Metro.co.uk has contacted Councillor David Jack and Councillor Sam Corcoran for comment.
