These are the pictures from inside a cramped Newcastle nightspot which caught the council's eye.

Images from inside Tokyo Bar on a busy Saturday night showed large groups of revellers sitting within touching distance of each other.

They were taken on October 10, as the soaring number of Covid-19 cases threatened to plunge the North East into Tier Three restrictions.

After we highlighted the pictures to Newcastle City Council, officials paid management a visit in order to "educate and encourage" them into keeping the venue Covid-friendly.

“Our night time economy plays an important part in making our city the vibrant place to live, work and socialise that we all love," added a council spokesperson.

“However, while we are positively encouraging people to safely enjoy themselves, we are seeing a high number of positive cases of Covid-19 in our area, and so must again stress to both customers and businesses the importance of doing all they can to prevent the spread of this potentially deadly virus."

“We continue to speak to the licensed trade and have provided advice, guidance and support, while carrying out routine inspections to monitor compliance with the new rules.

“And wherever we receive reports of potential issues – such as these photos – we will investigate and seek to engage, educate and encourage venue management to do the right thing, but if that does not happen we will not hesitate to take enforcement action.

“The only way for everyone to continue to enjoy our great pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants is to demonstrate social responsibility.

Pictures taken inside Tokyo, on Westgate Road, prompted a visit from Newcastle City Council officials to 'educate' management

“Take sensible steps while out and about, be careful about how much you drink, and remember your actions – or lack thereof - could seriously impact on the wider community, including vulnerable family and friends.”

They were taken on a night the cocktail bar had advertised live music on what it said at the time was "maybe our last Saturday night for a bit".

However, it wasn't and on Friday crowds were pictured mingling outside Tokyo as revellers hit the town.

Venues were ultimately granted a stay of execution by the Government, with the region remaining - for now - in Tier Two.

However, despite infections dropping across the region, there are reports the Government may still be considering enforcing the toughest Tier Three restrictions on the North East.

ChronicleLive has made repeated attempts to contact the Westgate Road venue for comment.
