GAIL Platt has got her work cut out with her mum, Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) on the cobbles.
Gail (Helen Worth) tries to cheer her Audrey up following the death of Norris, and plans a get together for her birthday. She invites Audrey’s former friend Rita along to try and get the pair to see eye-to-eye.
The pair fell out after Norris dropped the bombshell at his funeral that Rita has been getting her hair done by Audrey’s rival, Claudia (Rula Lenska).
Audrey’s not happy to turn up and find only Gail, Sarah and David have come to her birthday meal.
She refuses a drink, getting upset thinking they regard her as an old lush, and then becomes offended by gifts that she feels are suitable for an “old lady.”
To make matters worse, she then snaps at Gail who notices she is squinting when trying to read.
Of course, Rita takes the worst possible moment to arrive, only for Audrey to storm out and get into her car.
She tries to drive off in a huff only to hear a loud crunch, and a horrified Gail tells Audrey that she has reversed into Rita’s car. Rita is furious at the dent.
A concerned Gail and Sarah ask Audrey about the accident and wonder if she’s losing her faculties, and an insulted Audrey accuses them of being ageist.
There’s an olive branch when Audrey meets Rita in the cafe, apologises for damaging her car and offers to pay for the repairs.
It doesn’t last long though, as she then takes offence when Rita suggests she maybe needs her eyes testing.
Desperate to try and stop things from getting any worse, Gail convinces David and Sarah to stage an intervention to get to the bottom of Audrey’s problems.
Gail invites her mum over, hoping there will be a civilised discussion with Audrey.
With all of the upset so far, will Audrey take the feedback in good faith or be even more insulted?
Coronation Street airs these scenes on Monday September 27, Wednesday September 29, and Friday October 1 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
