Coronation Street's new character is set to play a key role in one of the soap's main storylines

Stu Carpenter made his bow on Wetherfield in a small role earlier this month.

The homeless character was also seen holding Corey Brent's bag during Super Soap Week and he became directly embroiled in the long-running saga during last night's episodes.

Corey's bag is important evidence that could link him to the murder of Seb Franklin as it contains his blood soaked clothes from the night of the attack.

The police were unable to locate the bag during the trial, which eventually led to Kelly Neelan being wrongly charged with the killing.

However, Stu's introduction to the show has given hope Corey could get his come-uppance after he was spotted holding the rucksack by Asha in her shop.

An exciting chase scene ensued, but Stu managed to evade Asha and Nina.

In the second part of the double-header, the character made another appearance as his true intentions in the major storyline became clear.

Stu cornered an unsuspecting Corey as he returned from training and revealed he saw him throw the bag into the river.

The character then threatened to blackmail Corey as he said he would give him the rucksack back for the right price.

Viewers on Twitter erupted in hysterics as Stu taunted Corey with a song - and demanded the character become a permanent character.

Who plays Stu in Coronation Street?

Stu Carpenter is played by Bill Fellows and the actor who plays him confirmed he is set to continue his major part in the storyline in a tweet earlier this week.

He said: "For friends interested in Coronation Street, my storyline starts tomorrow Wednesday 27th."

And Coronation Street fans may recognise Bill from other shows as the 64-year-old has built up a rich television career.

The actor has worked with the BBC on soaps such as Doctors and Casualty - and he showed off his comedy chops with a hilarious performance as Ted in This Time with Alan Partridge.

His latest big role came for Apple TV+ as George in the critically acclaimed Ted Lasso alongside comedy superstar Jason Sudeikis.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV and ITVHub
