Conor McGregor wants to fight Dustin Poirier again in May for the lightweight title.

The Irishman was stopped in the second round of his rematch with Poirier on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.

But having won the rivals' first fight in 2014, McGregor wants an immediate trilogy bout to determine the next 155lb champion.

Khabib Nurmagomedov still holds the belt but is expected to give it up and confirm his retirement.

Poirier is almost certain to fight for the title in his next fight and McGregor wants to be in the opposite corner.

"He's already harassing everybody to get the rematch; he'd love the rematch and I don't think Dustin is against that," his head coach John Kavanagh told ESPN.

"If we can get that before the summer that would be amazing; if it's not be then maybe he drifts off into boxing.

"We're one and one, we gave him the rematch and I hope he returns the sentiment

"If the fight had gone our way it would have been nice to look at Nate Diaz for the belt but this is the one that lights the fire in him.

"I was looking for him on the yacht and he was in the gym doing an hour-long tough weights workout; that shows you where he is in the head.

"That's the big drive, that's the story, it's one apiece. They're right up there in the rankings, they're popular fighters and its a beautiful match-up.

"Dustin is riding high with confidence, I'm sure his confidence is super-high. We need to fix that technique with the leg and another couple of things as well, but Dustin vs Conor III for the belt in May would be amazing."

McGregor returned to his  yacht after the fight and is now in Dubai as he considers his next move.

But he looks certain to return despite suffering his second defeat in his last three fights,.

And Kavanagh added: "He's already looking for the next date, which we hope to get sooner rather than later.

"He wanted a busy 2021 and nothing has changed. I hope we can get the rematch but if it's not that I'm not sure what it would be, whether it would be another MMA fight or a boxing fight."
