Conor McGregor in talks to fight Justin Gaethje in summer with US star frontrunner ahead of Floyd Mayweather and Khabib

CONOR MCGREGOR is reportedly in talks with Justin Gaethje for a bumper UFC showdown.

Notorious made his return to the cage in stunning fashion last month by defeating Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds.

That was his first since UFC Lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, who he wants another shot at, submitted him in the fourth round back in October 2018.

Now it could be the 31-year-old Gaethje that is next in line for the Irishman, according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

On his latest edition of ESPN’s MMA Show, Helwani claims both camps are in discussions for a fight in the summer.

The American is 4-2 in the UFC and has publicly claimed McGregor has been dodging him.

Each of his fights have ended in knockouts, with his last three all ending in the first.

Gaethje, who knocked out Cerrone last time out in September, has earned seven fight-night bonuses from his six matches with the promotion.

Now he could be set for his biggest payday yet if he secures a clash with McGregor.

Speaking to TheMacLife in January, McGregor seemed to be keen on facing Gaethje.

He said: “He is on the list. He is on the list. Maybe I will face him next.

“Maybe I’ll face him next. He has it coming to him. … He’s a funny guy.

“He’s been taking it very to heart. I know the feeling when you do that.

“Maybe I’ll get through Donald and I’ll have a quick turnaround against Justin. Maybe that’s what will happen. But Justin is on the list, no doubt.”

Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather has also said he will fight McGregor again if the price is right.

Mayweather officially retired from the ring after 50 wins from 50 fights in 2017 after beating UFC star McGregor - in a fight that earned him more than £200m.

But the 43-year-old announced in November he is “coming out of retirement in 2020” to work on a “spectacular event” with UFC boss Dana White.

And when quizzed on another one-on-one showdown with McGregor, he told TMZ Sports: “Man if they pay I’m there to play.

“And if they’re paying cash Conor I’ll whip your ass... again.

“I do what I do everywhere, I pick up money I get paid to tell my story.”
