Conor McGregor and Poirier congratulate Charles Oliveira for UFC 262 KO of Chandler as Mac predicts he’ll claim LW title

CONOR MCGREGOR has congratulated Charles Oliveira for his stunning upset of Michael Chandler.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom claimed the vacant lightweight title early this morning in the main event of UFC 262 with a brutal second-round knockout of the American.

A picture-perfect counter left hook from the Sao Paulo slugger early in the second round signalled the beginning of the end for Chandler, who was eventually finished by academic ground strikes.

Former two-division champ McGregor was among the interested observers of the lightweight barnburner and was quick to send a message to Do Bronx.

He tweeted: "Congrats to Olivera on becoming the 11th UFC lightweight champion.

"Wonder who Twelve is…"

McGregor's spelling of 12 was in reference to his Proper No.12 whiskey, which recently bagged him top spot on Forbes' highest-paid athletes list.

The Notorious wasn't the only lightweight with one eye on the main event of UFC's sixth pay-per-view event of the year.

Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier - who is gearing up for a trilogy fight wth Mystic Mac - also tuned into the contest and sent messages to the bout's participants.

He tweeted: "Congratulations @CharlesDoBronxs you earned that the hard way!

"Head up @MikeChandlerMMA highest of the highs and lowest of the lows."

Chandler was crestfallen after coming up short in his maiden UFC title fight but has vowed to have the belt wrapped around his waist in the next 12 months.

He said: "I think we saw one of the toughest dudes on the planet come back from adversity.

"Charles Oliveira is the real deal and I take nothing away from him. I will be back.

"I promise you I'm gonna wear that UFC strap within the next 12 months. This is a great opportunity. I thank the UFC for this opportunity.

"Charles Oliveira showed how he was a consummate professional and he showed up for the last 10, 11 years here inside the UFC octagon.

"We'll get this one back. We're gonna run this one back eventually."

Oliveira, on the other hand, was over the moon, telling his doubters: "I told you I was going to knock him out, and I came and knocked him out.

"I proved to everybody I'm the lion of lions."

Joe Rogan says Conor McGregor needs someone analysing him from the outside to counteract his ego
