Bowles ace says Commonwealth Games bronze was 'amazing' and Scottish fans were great

Blackwood bowler Ein McLean says he was buoyed by a "blue sea" from Scottish fans when he won bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

The 38-year-old reached the men's singles semi-finals but lost to eventual winner Aaron Wilson of Australia [who then defeated Northern Ireland's Gary Kelly] and Malaysia's Fair Izwan Abd Muin wins the bronze medal in his debut.

Blackwood says it was his goal to get on the podium, although Victoria player Yin preferred a brighter medal.

He said:

"The semi-finals and bronze finals were held on the same day, so it was hard to get back on my feet after losing the semi-finals, but it felt great to be on the podium. A great experience.

"I wish I could have won a silver or a gold medal, but a medal was my goal. It felt great to win a medal in singles."

McLean said while traveling. 's Scottish fans were a huge help, not just that day, but throughout the tournament.

He said:

"That was one of them. When I went into the bronze medal match, I looked up and behind the rink was just a blue ocean.

“The game started very well. We took the lead with eight or nine shots.

"But I managed to keep the buffer and cross the line.

As for Scotland, expect to do well given the players' past results to date

"But I didn't put too much pressure on myself. I knew that if I played well, I had a chance.

"Overall. It was a great result and I am just happy to have won a medal.”

McLean has enjoyed the experience and hopes to participate in the 2026 Games in Victoria, Australia. .

He said: That's normal.

``But it was nice to meet athletes from different countries and different sports. Scotland provided excellent support.

For Ian, who is eager to qualify for next year's World Championships, it's now back to national competition.

He said:

"I have the British Isles Championship in Belfast in October. After that, all eyes are on joining the elite team and next year's World Championships.

"That selection will probably be held early next year, and hopefully I'll be there."
